  4.     Retired General Gustavo Alvarez Martinez, former head of
  5. the Honduran armed forces, left his fortress-like home in
  6. Tegucigalpa's posh Florencia Norte district just after 10 a.m.
  7. His driver was taking him to purchase a Bible and visit his
  8. brother. At an intersection three blocks away, as many as six
  9. guerrillas toting submachine guns sprayed Alvarez's car with
  10. bullets as he pleaded, "Don't do this to me!" The left-wing
  11. Popular Liberation Movement, known as the Cinchoneros, claimed
  12. responsibility for the deaths of Alvarez and his driver.

  14.     Some speculate that Alvarez, a staunch anti-Communist, was
  15. targeted for his role in turning sections of Honduras into
  16. bases for the U.S. military and the U.S.-backed contras, who
  17. have been fighting to topple the Sandinista regime next door in
  18. Nicaragua. Cinchoneros leaders indicated they were avenging
  19. Alvarez's brutal attempt to crush their movement in the early
  20. 1980s, as well as the former general's part in the disappearance
  21. of 120 alleged subversives. Whatever the motive, Hondurans fear
  22. that growing political violence could turn their once placid
  23. nation into the Lebanon of Latin America.
